Montesquieu and Francoise de Graffigny present revolutionary female characters in search of freedom. The women from Usbek’s seraglio – Zachi, Zephis, Zelis, Fatme and the most tragic and rebellious one, Roxane, also the heroine of Mme de Graffigny Zilia, criticize the hypocrisy and cruelty of the societies where they live. Their revolts demonstrate their courageous nature and their determination to be free.
