Animal remains from the archaeological site "Ancient City of Zaldapa – Tetraconch Church Sector," (NE Bulgaria)

This study presents the archaeozoological analysis of animal remains recovered from the archaeological site of the Ancient City of Zaldapa, Tetraconch Church Sector, in northeastern Bulgaria. The examined material comprises 295 bone and tooth fragments and mollusc shells collected from 46 samples during archaeological excavations conducted between 2024 and 2026. A total of 22 taxa were identified, including domestic mammals, poultry, wild mammals, fish, and molluscs.
Animal remains from the Monastery of Chargubilya Mostich in Veliki Preslav (10-12th c. AD) – NE Bulgaria

A total 1653 animal remains of 18 taxa have been established in the medieval (10-12 c. AD.) Monastery of Chargubilya Mostich in Veliki Preslav (Shumen Region, CN Bulgaria). Some wild mammals as red deer, roe deer, wild boar and European edible dormouse were rarely hunted, while livestock breeding (cattle, pig, goat, sheep, horse, donkey and rabbit) was the basic source of meat for the settlement’s inhabitants.
