One of the most important thematic lines in the work of Ivo Andrić is connected to the phenomenon of Bosnian Franciscans: this goes through the author’s entire body of work, but it is expressed to the highest degree in those texts which can be defined as Franciscan stories. Among these stories the cycle of Brother Marko and the cycle of Brother Petar stand out. Thanks to its high and refined degree of literary elaboration (including a peculiar realisation of the technique of framing) and to its great semantic meaningfulness, the narrative cycle of Brother Petar – including the short novel The Devil’s Yard – is one of the culminations of Andrić’s art and represents a morpholog ical solution situated between the long story and the short novel. Thanks to Brother Petar’s character, who functions as a structural and thematic key with a historical ba sis, this cycle carries out a peculiar concretisation of the complex relationship among the author’s personality, historical reality and fiction.
