Abstract
The Bulgarian-Jewish literature written and published in Israel from 1948 to 1989 remains an almost unexplored phenomena in the contemporary Bulgarian historical discourse. This article focuses on the interpretation of selected literary texts (poetry novels, and short stories), with particular attention to the poetics of nostalgia and, especially, to the relationship between nostalgic lamentations and traumatic memory, as the memory of Bulgarian Jews oscillated precisely between these extremes of remembering. The article examines texts by the following authors: Albert Mihael, Shlomo Kalo, Tilda Levi, Albert Varsano, Albert Levi-Pepo, Yona Schwarz, Edi Arueti, Aaron Assa, Salis Tadzher, and Moni Papo. Within mainstream Israeli culture, the works of Bulgarian Jews represent a distinctive subculture, bearing a unique language and cultural identity that reveals a specific historical memory.
