Item VERNACULAR: STRESSED ENDING -A/-'A IN PLURAL OF THE THIRD DECLENTION(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Neycheva, TanyaThe process of replacing the plural ending -ы/-и (-y/-i) with -а́/-я́ (-a/-'a) in the contemporary Russian standard language is observed in the forms of masculine nouns, which end in a consonant in the nominative singular case. Beyond the first declension, the spread of this phenomenon in literate speech is still unacceptable. In colloquial language, however, the range of words affected is much wider, regardless of grammatical gender and partly not depending on the type of declension. The article discusses examples of replacing -ы/-и with -а́/-я́ in the forms of words of the III declension; the purely vernacular (for now) nature of their use is emphasized; additional connotations and emotional and stylistic load of these forms are revealed; an attempt has been made to explain the inevitability of the appearance of certain forms.Item SYMBOL – IS IT POSSIBLE TO GRASP THE IMMENSITY (TOWARD THE PROBLEM OF SYMBOL EXPLORATION IN LINGUOCULTUROLOGY)(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Chakarova, YulianaThe study provides suggestions for consistent and not contradictory presenting in fundamental works within the discipline of one of the key concepts in linguoculturology – symbol, as well as some ideas that could be the basis of building solid methodology for exploring this complex phenomenon. My analysis of a large amount of relevant sources has shown that often they refer to authors, schools and opinions that disagree with each other or with the main stream of understanding of the symbol within the discipline while giving no explanation of the differences or the reasons for that. The paper touches upon some ideas of the most relevant schools and disciplines that are in agreement with the aims of linguocultural analysis and argues that together they can build a strong theoretical basis for studying linguocultural symbols.Item NON-INFERENTIAL USES OF THE CONCLUSIVE IN THE MODERN BULGARIAN LANGUAGE(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Aleksova, KrasimiraIn the article I present 3 types of non-inferential uses of the conclusive in the modern Bulgarian language. The first type can be called "weak knowledge" of the speaker who expresses as their own statement about common facts, without the speaker themself witnessing the events. The second case is observed in indirect speech when using mainly the tenses of the past plan. Then the conclusive expresses the integrated feature of indirect information and competes with the renarrative. The third case represents a transposition of the conclusive in the field of the indicative. The speaker expresses with the conclusive an expressive, emphatic personal affirmation of witnessed facts from the past.Item WORD-FORMATION MEANS OF EXPRESSING NEGATION IN MODERN BULGARIAN(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Chakarova, KrasimiraThe study focuses on the word-formation means within the periphery of the negative polarity in the Modern Bulgarian Language. The derivational morpheme не-, which has the highest functional activity among the negating derivational markers, is discussed in detail. The scientific analysis also focuses on the caritive prefixes без- (used as a synonym of не-), the prefixes раз-, пре- and от-, involved in the formation of verbs of the decursive-resultative and finitive modes of action (Aktionsart), as well as the negative formants of foreign origin ин-, а-, им-, и-, де-, and дис-. Important conclusions are drawn about the peculiarities of the usage of the linguistic means under consideration.Item TEMPTATION (AN ATTEMPT AT LINGUISTIC AND STYLISTIC ANALYSIS)(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Dikova, BistraIn the study, an attempt is made for a linguistic and stylistic analysis of the story Temptation by Elin Pelin. Activity at all language levels was examined. Cases of metaphony are described, the duality of vocabulary, morphological transpositions, various stylistic concepts at the syntactic level (types of sentences, repetitions, syntactic parallelism), tropes (metaphor, metonymy, irony) and stylistic figures are analyzed. The purpose of the research is to reveal how the idea of antagonism between the human and the canonical is suggested through the very language of the work.Item LEXICAL ABBREVIATIONS IN BULGARIAN YOUTH SLANG(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Todorova, TanyaThis paper investigates youth slang abbreviations in Bulgarian, utilizing the classification proposed by Ts. Karastoycheva. The research is based on empirical data collected from the online platform „www.bgjargon.com“. The findings reveal a notable preference among youth slang speakers for initialisms. These initialisms manifest in two subcategories: the origination of novel initialisms within the domain of youth slang and the reinterpretation of pre-existing initialisms from the standard language. Other means for abbreviation are also discussed, along with an exploration of the correlation between youth slang and internet slang and an examination of the semantic content of the data.Item SOME SPECIFIC MODELS FOR FORMATION OF DIMINUTIVES AND AUGMENTATIVES(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Koleva, RadostinaThe current paper aims to compare a group of diminutives – the so called diminutives pluralia tantum, for example крачка, хорица, дечица, ботушки, картофки – and a group of augmentatives, such as калища, гьолища, месища, телеса, etc., which are used in plural and do not have augmentative correlates in singular. The formation, the semantic and stylistic features of both groups of nouns are examined. We try to answer the question, whether the augmentatives explored here are pluralia tantum or they are parallel expressive plural forms of nouns in singular.Item FROM THE CONCEPT TO THE GRAMMATICAL CATEGORY OF PERSON IN THE BULGARIAN LANGUAGE(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Vidralska, MilenaThe understanding of the category of person as a grammatical phenomenon is implicit for linguists. The transition from the logical concept to the grammatical category of person is a process that is still debated in linguistics. The article aims to review some of the most significant works, dealing with the grammaticalization of the meaning of personality in the Bulgarian language, particularly the ones originating in the Bulgarian context. The author’s objective is to offer a personal perspective on the evolution of the grammaticalization process.Item ANTHROPONYMIC PRACTICES REGARDING BULGARIAN TURKS (OBSERVATIONS ON THE PERSONAL NAMES OF A FAMILY FROM DOBRICH)(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Kutsarova, SemaLinguocultural studies is one of the leading and rapidly developing fields in modern linguistics, whose main goal is the study of the relationship between language and culture. The study of the atroponymic system of a language occupies a significant place in this field. In the present text the anthroponymicon of Bulgarian Turks is studied, describing the personal names of the representatives of several generations of a family from Dobrich, dating from the first decades of the 20th century until today. The aim of this article is to highlight the main factors influencing the naming system of the target group, to trace the influence of social factors as well as psychological foundations in the naming process.Item BULGARIAN SURNAMES MOTIVATED BY A DOMESTICATED ANIMAL SPECIES(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Kartalova, MariyanaThe research object of this article falls within the sphere of anthroponymy. The article focuses on Bulgarian surnames motivated by a domesticated animal species. Over 270 surnames and their word forms are used for the purposes of this study, categorized into two main groups. Despite the detailed etymology of the motivating lexemes remaining outside the direct scope of the study, the surnames are accompanied by etymological notes, as well as the semantics of the dialectal word. This type of lexical units is highly indicative from the perspective of folk psychology as they reveal the Bulgarian mentality in previous eras, as well as the role of animal husbandry in their lifestyle and everyday life.Item ON TURKISH PERSONAL NAMES MOTIVATED BY THE NAMES OF FLOWERS(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Bekir, HarunThis paper delves into Turkish personal names inspired by flower names, scrutinizing them from a linguistic and cultural standpoint. The objective of this research is to pinpoint which flower names are adopted as personal names within the Turkish context; to dissect the morphological and etymological aspects of these names; and to gauge the prevalence of various flower names in the creation of personal names. A corpus of Turkish personal names influenced by flower names has been compiled for this study. The findings reveal the most commonly used flower names as personal names, elucidate the patterns of name formation, and uncover the etymological roots of these names. By analyzing Turkish personal names derived from flower names, the research will uncover new facets of Turkish anthroponomy and its underlying value system.Item INDICATORS OF LANGUAGE GAME IN THE WORKS OF NEOFIT BOZVELI(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Radeva, NiyaThe language game which is widely used in modern Bulgarian speech practice, in fiction and media texts, and in advertisements has its beginning in the period of Renaissance. The potential for using the language game develops together with the maturing of modern personality and with the expansion of his/her knowledge in the sphere of culture, history and science. In the literary heritage of N. Bozveli, from the forties of XIX century, are present almost all the indicators of language game, stated in science. The subject of the study is gaining experience, connected to paremias and phraseological expressions, as well as with precedent texts in two editions of Bozveli’s works.Item REGARDING THE DICTIONARY OF LEXICO-SEMANTIC DUBLETS IN EUCHOLOGICAL TEXTS(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Toncheva, HristinaThe following paper presents a small part of the great number of lexicosemantic dublets found in later texts descending from Old-Bulgarian prayers and services until the XIX century, known in the scientific sphere as Euchologium Sinaiticum from X – XI century. The terms lexical (lexico-semantic, lexicocontext) variants, lexical dublets, textological dublets are used as equivalents. They will be included in the dictionary of lexico-semantic dublets in the Euchologium, which is being prepared.Item THE SURNAME CHOBANOV IN THE POLISH ANTHROPONYMIC SYSTEM(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Walczak-Mikolajczakowa, MariolaThe suffixal form of the surname Czobanow, based on the noun czoban, is not characteristic of the anthroponymous system of the Polish language, although currently there are three people with the surname Czobanow living in Poland. Since the Polish language has assimilated the Turkish apelativum çoban via Wallachian or Ukrainian, in the Polish language naming system we are dealing with forms derived from czaban and caban. The author discusses the penetration of these appellatives into the Polish language, their geographical spread and ways of deriving surnames from them. She also draws attention to the abundance of the various forms.Item FUNCTIONAL POTENTIAL OF TEXT WITHIN TEXT IN THE BULGARIAN PRESS (BASED ON MATERIAL FROM THE NEWSPAPER “CAPITALˮ)(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Tencheva, BoryanaThe present study aims to explore the possibilities of incorporating precedent phenomena in journalistic articles from a functional perspective. Using intertextuality is a common technique in print media, as it provides numerous opportunities for interpretation, expanding the context of the message. The inclusion of quotes, as well as the adaptation of the form of the original language unit, offers a broader range of possibilities for enriching the content, expanding the semantics and allowing the reader to more tangibly feel the dialogue between texts.Item HESITATION PHENOMENA IN THE SPEECH OF BULGARIAN STUDENTS LEARNING RUSSIAN LANGUAGE(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Nedyalkova, ViktoriaThis article focuses on the analysis of hesitation phenomena in the spontaneous monologue speech of Bulgarian students studying the Russian language. During the study, a personal database of recordings was created and an analysis of the spoken texts was carried out. Students read and retold the parable “The Master of the Mountain.” The retellings were recorded and analyzed by PRAAT software. Using auditory, descriptive-analytical, instrumental and statistical analysis, the exponents of hesitation were identified. The analysis showed that markers of the speech-generating process lead to isochrony of utterances and are closely related to difficulties in foreign language planning, execution and cognitive processes.Item EMOTIONAL-EVALUATIVE POTENTIAL OF PRONOUN GROUPS IN THE BULGARIAN AND RUSSIAN LANGUAGES(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Kuzova, MayaThe article is devoted to the large and complex topic of linguistic expression. We are interested specifically in the emotional and expressive potential of pronouns, which do not always play their conventional roles. Almost all categories of pronouns are capable of moving far away from the familiar, uninspired image, expressing and inspiring emotional evaluation. By clearly outlining the side vectors of their functioning, they often become very significant in the emotive- evaluative context. Undoubtedly, their special use or seemingly random presence in speech is clearly connected with pragmatic reasons.Item TRANSLATION OF EXPRESSIVE SPEECH FORMULAE IN THE LIGHT OF PRAGMATICS OF DIALOGUE(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Petkova, SilviaThe paper examines the issues of translating Russian expressive speech formulae into Bulgarian. The study of the contexts of the use of the formula Nado zhe! allows to distinguish between six meanings, presented as speech acts of expressing specific emotions in response to the previous turn or the situation itself. As a result of the analysis of Russian literary text and their translations into Bulgarian a wide variability of interlingual correspondences is established, considering the context of communication and the speaker’s intention. To choose the most suitable equivalent, the translator should be focused both on conveying the pragmatic function of the utterance and complying with the colloquial usage.Item ON SOME DIFFICULTIES OF LEXICOGRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION OF TERMINOLOGICAL VARIATION IN MODERN BULGARIAN AND RUSSIAN LANGUAGES(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Simeonova, KristiyanaAs tools of cognition, terms need scientifically based and adequate coverage in dictionaries of various types. Today, terms, term elements and language units related to the so-called terminological vocabulary are found not only in terminological dictionaries themselves, but also in many other types of dictionaries (explanatory, non-logical, phraseological, orthographic, synonymous, antonymic, etc.). Reflecting terminological variability in dictionaries confronts lexicographers with a number of difficulties. These difficulties are determined, on the one hand, by the complex nature of this phenomenon, and on the other, by the possibility of using various lexicographic solutions in the dictionary representation of options.Item MORPHOLOGICAL AND COMBINATORIAL FEATURES OF VERBAL NEOLOGISMS (BASED ON CORPUS DATA)(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Kozera-Sławomirska, Izabela; Petkova, SilviaObserving the dynamics of language development – the emergence or gradual extinction of certain words, constructions or grammatical forms – is one of the most interesting tasks of modern linguistics. The object of this study are verbal neologisms registered in two dictionaries, presenting the latest vocabulary that has entered the Russian language in recent years. In view of the fact, that the verb is considered to be the most complex part of speech, special attention is paid to the morphological and combinatorial features of the new verbal formations, in particular the aspectual characteristics, word-formation potential, semantic-pragmatic properties, which are studied based on data from the Russian National Corpus.
