Item ADDRESS AS A COMPONENT OF BULGARIAN AND TURKISH NETIQUETTE(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Aleksandrova, Stefka; Shukrieva, MenentIn the present study, the functional-semantic characteristics of one of the speech acts important for effective interpersonal communication – the address – are examined, focusing on its uses in social networks (mainly in the Facebook platform and its Messenger application). We take Facebook not only as a public scene, but also as a type of interpersonal communication, from which conclusions can be drawn about the meaning and role of address as an important factor for modern speech interaction, for socio-cultural differences and conventions. The purpose of the report is to study the current use and specific cultural features of the address in the Bulgarian and Turkish online space.Item ADVERBS AND THEIR INTEGRATION INTO THE STRUCTURE OF ENGLISH AND BULGARIAN CLAUSES(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Mateva, SimonaThis paper aims to contribute to the formation of a unitary theory that describes the positions of adverbs in sentences. It analyses high and low adverbs in Bulgarian and English, using Cinque’s idea that adverbs are the specifiers of functional heads and form a universal hierarchy. The fundamental idea behind this approach is that verbs move around adverbs. Adapting Ledgeway and Lombardi's proposal of a clause-medial functional projection, YP, I have proposed that Bulgarian finite lexical verbs can target a head within the lower adverb space and move to the head of the functional projection YP, but they cannot target positions within the higher adverb space. In contrast, the positions of English finite lexical verbs are very limited. The paper also suggests that English and Bulgarian auxiliaries originate in two different places, with Bulgarian past auxiliaries offering a second Merge site – YP. The analysed examples demonstrate that active past participles in English cannot raise freely within the lower adverb class but could raise from VP to YP and optionally continue to raise higher. However, Bulgarian past participles behave differently depending on whether they are used with a present auxiliary or a past auxiliary.Item ALLEGORICAL MARRIAGES IN SELECT WORKS OF SYDNEY OWENSON AND CHARLES MATURIN(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Petkova, TsvetelinaThe paper looks at the allegorical use of intercultural marriage in Irish literature following the 1801 Act of Union, with a specific focus on Owenson’s The Wild Irish Girl and Maturin’s The Milesian Chief. It examines how these national tale novels mirror the Anglo-Irish relationship, employing marriage as an allegory of political and cultural amalgamation. Navigating through historical context, literary techniques, and the depiction of Irish identity, the analysis attempts to illustrate how these works express the intricacies of Irish society in the early nineteenth century.Item AN INTERCULTURAL PERSPECTIVE ON THE AUTHORS AND THEIR SELF-PRESENTATION IN INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S AND YOUTH LITERATURE(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Kuzminykh, KseniaThe intended contribution focuses on the complex process of author construction in children’s and young adult literature. The focus is on both the concise excerpts from the texts of internationally active authors as well as their interviews on social media and comments in the peritext. The following questions play a guiding role: How can authorial intentions be recognized in authors’ literary and non-literary texts? Is there a discrepancy between the statements in the peritext, interviews and in the literary texts? Can cultural specifics be identified? The choice of authors can be determined by their auratic media presence.Item ANTHROPONYMIC PRACTICES REGARDING BULGARIAN TURKS (OBSERVATIONS ON THE PERSONAL NAMES OF A FAMILY FROM DOBRICH)(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Kutsarova, SemaLinguocultural studies is one of the leading and rapidly developing fields in modern linguistics, whose main goal is the study of the relationship between language and culture. The study of the atroponymic system of a language occupies a significant place in this field. In the present text the anthroponymicon of Bulgarian Turks is studied, describing the personal names of the representatives of several generations of a family from Dobrich, dating from the first decades of the 20th century until today. The aim of this article is to highlight the main factors influencing the naming system of the target group, to trace the influence of social factors as well as psychological foundations in the naming process.Item BETWEEN FACT AND MYTH: POCAHONTAS IN THE DISNEY FILMS(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Stamenković, SavaIn 1995 Walt Disney Animation Studios produced an animated film that remains the most popular artistic creation about Pocahontas. The creators of the film tried to strike a balance between historical truth, political correctness and profit, but as is often the case in the industry, profit won out. Much of what we know about Pocahontas’ life has been omitted or “creatively altered,” such as her age. The 1998 sequel, “Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World,” was a failed attempt to correct some of these mistakes. We analyse the elements of these films in which Disney drew on the facts of the life of Matoaka, the daughter of the Powhatan paramount chief, on the myth about her, and on Native American mythology. We also look at the songs, the eco-critical awareness of the screenwriters and the didactic side of the films, all of which have been praised by the critics.Item BETWEEN THE BIG AND THE SMALL IN LITERATURE: THE PATH OF ANDREY GERMANOV(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Dimitrova, ElkaThe paper explores Andrey Germanovʼs (1932 – 1981) poetry from the collection of poems “Sprouts” [“Kalnove”] (1959) to the memoir book “Russet Boys” [“Shayachni Momcheta”] (1981). The study is developed with a view to the context of the changing political and sociocultural situation in Bulgaria in the period from 1944 to the beginning of the 1980s. Germanov’s writings are interpreted within the thematic frame of the path from the ideologically orthodox texts to the criticism of the political system. A thesis is proposed that Germanov’s eventual place between the “big” and the “small” Bulgarian writers of the period is predisposed by his ideological “transgression”.Item BULGARIAN SURNAMES MOTIVATED BY A DOMESTICATED ANIMAL SPECIES(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Kartalova, MariyanaThe research object of this article falls within the sphere of anthroponymy. The article focuses on Bulgarian surnames motivated by a domesticated animal species. Over 270 surnames and their word forms are used for the purposes of this study, categorized into two main groups. Despite the detailed etymology of the motivating lexemes remaining outside the direct scope of the study, the surnames are accompanied by etymological notes, as well as the semantics of the dialectal word. This type of lexical units is highly indicative from the perspective of folk psychology as they reveal the Bulgarian mentality in previous eras, as well as the role of animal husbandry in their lifestyle and everyday life.Item CONCEPTUAL METAPHOR AND CONCEPTUAL METONYMY IN DICKENS’ SHORT FICTION(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Kyriakakis, EfstratiosThe paper explores the role of cognitive conceptualization in literary language. This research draws on the work of George Lakoff and Mark Turner on the significance of cognitive conceptualization in understanding literature, specifically their book More than Cool Reason. The focus of the paper is to attempt to establish an approach to identifying conceptual metaphors and metonymies in literature. The text presents the essential theoretical background necessary for the topic, which is followed by specific examples from a literary excerpt from a short story by Charles Dickens.Item CONSTITUENTS OF ENGLISH AND BULGARIAN ALTERNATIVE INTERROGATIVE STRUCTURES AND THEIR FUNCTIONS WITHIN THE CLAUSE(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Spasova, VelichkaThe article investigates the constituents of English and Bulgarian alternative interrogative structures (E&BAISs) and their functions within the clause. The qualitative and quantitative findings from the comparative corpusbased study indicate that E&BAISs most often function as direct objects, subject-oriented predicative complements and adjuncts. E&BAISs are often examples of binary unmixed coordination of noun phrases, prepositional phrases or (closed) interrogative subordinate clauses. The constituents are most often found in the same sentence. Preposing of the first constituent or of the whole alternative interrogative structure is a phenomenon common to Bulgarian alternative interrogative structures.Item CORRELATIONS BETWEEN GRAMMATICAL AND COMMUNICATIVE WORD ORDER IN ENGLISH AND THEIR BULGARIAN EQUIVALENTS(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Grancharova, SlavkaThe article discusses the correlations between grammatical and communicative word order and the potential problems which the divergence between them might pose in teaching and translation practices. The communicative analysis is based on the FSP (Functional Sentence Perspective) theory elaborated by the Prague linguists. The differences in word order between English and Bulgarian, as well as some similarities, are illustrated by examples from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and the Bulgarian National Corpus (BNC). The focus is on some practical grammar issues and not on teaching methodology or translation theory and practice.Item DESIRE, FULFILMENT AND RACE IN JESSIE FAUSET’S PLUM BUN: A NOVEL WITHOUT A MORAL(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Boneva-Kamenova, BozhidaraJessie Fauset’s most famous novel, Plum Bun: A Novel Without a Moral, has engaged critics and readers for over a century now. The book’s conventionality and focus on propriety have led to a number of negative critical treatments and its almost complete obscurity in the American literary canon. The current examination is an attempt to re-visit the novel and trace the manifestation of desire. This may open alternative avenues of understanding the effect of storytelling on the way black women formulate their desires and pursuits. Additionally, it may counter critical opinions which find the novel unremarkable and too traditional.Item DEVELOPMENT OF THE ALUMNI COMMUNITY. PERSPECTIVES FOR THE SLAVISTIC STUDIES(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Boncheva, Tiha; Kolev, VladimirThe aim of the article is to explore the history and significance of alumni clubs, highlighting their crucial role in facilitating communication among former, current, and prospective students. Alumni communities in humanities play a key role in supporting professional development and exchanging experiences. Maintaining current information about former students, conducting surveys on their career achievements, and organizing meetings are among the primary practices. In Bulgaria, the topic of alumni communities and their importance in the context of Slavic studies requires more attention. The implementation of specific measures and discussions would underscore their significance, ensuring a lasting contribution to education.Item DEVELOPMENT TRENDS IN THE MORPHOLOGICAL-TYPOLOGICAL PROFILE OF BULGARIAN. A QUANTITATIVE PERSPECTIVE(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Stankov, NikolayThe study investigates from a quantitative perspective the overall development of the morphology of the Bulgarian language in the past 100 years. It aims to determine whether and to what extent the language has become more or less analytic or synthetic. Additionally, the quantitative morphological differences between three text types – literary, scientific and journalistic – are measured and analysed. The study finds that Bulgarian has simultaneously become less analytic and less synthetic, resulting in a decrease of the grammatical information encoded in texts. A high level of syntheticity is measured in scientific texts, while literary works exhibit a relatively high level of analyticity.Item DIFFERENCE AS TRAGEDY IN THE MILL ON THE FLOSS BY GEORGE ELIOT(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Yasenova, KristinaThe following text aims to discuss George Eliot’s analysis of human relationships and her mindfulness of the pernicious effect caused by paradigms that condemn differences as mere weaknesses. Through “pragmatization of the imaginary” (Iser) in Eliot’s novel, as well as with some help from representatives of the natural sciences, we may be able to gain a closer understanding of how people’s stages of development and biological traits are often translated into tragic “prisons” of sociality.Item DIFFERENCES IN ENGLISH INTONATION PERCEPTION BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE BULGARIAN LEARNERS OF ENGLISH(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Kuncheva, Ralitsa PetrovaIntonation is an important linguistic tool that people utilize to convey additional grammatical, focus-marking and attitudinal meaning at the suprasegmental level of language. The present study investigates the possible role of biological sex in the perception and comprehension of different intonation contours and their function by male and female Bulgarian learners of English.Item DIMENSIONS OF OLD AGE IN THE TEXTS OF ATANAS DALCHEV(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Ichevska, TatyanaIn this paper, by way of comparing Atanas Dalchev's “Fragmentsˮ with some of his individual poems, written in the period 1920s – 1960s, we will try to trace how old age gets (re)interpreted, including the causes of aging. Another aim is to bring out the author's preferred images through which he visualizes and concretizes his ideas about old age and about life in general.Item DIMENSIONS OF THE BODY IN 20TH AND 21ST-CENTURY ITALIAN LITERATURE(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Gesheva, Radeya20th and 21st-century Italian literature examines the concept of body from different perspectives. Its projections take place in literature, influenced by a number of other factors – social environment, habitus, interaction with the political, economic and cultural field. The present study aims to delineate the boundaries of body. After tracing the main ideas on this concept, its development will be examined in an attempt to outline its image. The body can be interpreted in terms of its interconnection with geography, identity, power, humanity. The observations will be supported with examples from works by Primo Levi, Carlo Levi, Gianrico Carofiglio, and Michela Murgia.Item DISCUSSING THE SPANISH AND THE BULGARIAN PLUSCUAMPERFECT. TRANSLATIONAL EQUIVALENTS OF THE FORM HABÍA CANTADO IN BULGARIAN(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Tabakova, PolinaThe object of the present article is the verb form había cantado in Spanish and its correlate in Bulgarian бях пял. The main goal is through the method of comparative analysis to present the systemic meaning of these grammemes in both languages, to discuss their place in the temporal system, to reveal some of the translational equivalents of the form había cantado in modern Bulgarian.Item DO ENGLISH IDIOMS HOLD WOMEN BACK?(Plovdiv University Press "Paisii Hilendarski", 2023) Basisa, NataliaA connection between gender and language studies exists, as language mirrors social, cultural and gender asymmetries. Hellinger and Bußmann (2015) indicated that language has built a male-centered worldview, while according to the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis (Sapir 1929: 211): “the language is not only a product of a society, but also means of formation of its intellection and mentality”. Idioms convey principles of cultures, so they are the main source for gender-linguistic studies. The aim of this paper is to investigate, through corpora and dictionaries, whether idioms bear a sign of gender bias and if the English language has become more neutral.
